The Pendle or Lancashire Witches
Submitted by Global Moderator: Helen
Ever since i was a little girl i have been fascinated by witches and magic. I used to want to be the little girl in Bewitched (a program i used to watch in the late sixties) I still wish i could wiggle my nose and find all my house work done!
I was born in Essex and moved to the north of England when i was in my early twenties.
I couldn't believe my luck when i found that i had moved to a place steeped in history. While i was waiting for the house i was buying to come through. I stayed in a caravan in a village called Barley. It is at the foot of Pendle hill. I bought a tape on the trials of the Lancashire witches being naive and listened the story being relayed while listening by candle light.
I fell asleep but woke up with a start as my head hit my knees, the whole of the caravan had tipped over with a force that threw me out of bed. The caravan was parked on gravel and there wasn't a sound outside. I went out side and there was nobody in sight. It was 3am and there was just a heavy silence in the air. I got back into bed frightened and bemused. An hour later the same thing happened again. I wasn't asleep as i was too scared. There were no footsteps just a massive thud at the side of the caravan.
I laid awake all night and when it got light i went out side the caravan to inspect the damage to the caravan. There was not a mark on it, apart from the tyre on the far side being flat. I had been parked for 10 days so it puzzled me. When the people came to change the tyre they found that it had been slashed from under the ground.
The Pendle Witches also known as the Lancashire Witches were the most famous out of all English history. The 13 accused were supposed to have murdered 17 people around the forest of Pendle. 10 were hanged in Lancaster. Demdike the most famous died awaiting trial.
